2014-2015: Mathematics Numeracy – Semester 2

Mathematics Numeracy Archive

Welcome to the course information where I keep an informal log of the weekly events in the course as well as track the current assignments.

  • Week 1: I introduced the course and we had a discussion about numeracy in general, we then did a biography activity (“All About Me”) and had a discussion around it as an “ice-breaker”, then we went into a computer lab and worked on a career cruising activity and had a discussion around it
  • Week 2: this week we had some new students join our Numeracy class so we had to take some time to catch them up. We did a psychological test on what type of learning style are you. We then discussed the results. Finally, we completed the week with our first numeracy diagnostic test on number sense.
  • Week 3: This week we had some catch up time for some students on their first diagnostic. As well, we took some time to discuss the results. We also started our next unit “Numbers” with a presentation on brackets and negative numbers and an activity to work on those concepts.
  • Week 4: This week we completed our look at negative numbers and went over the activity. Then we started a look a order of operations with a presentation and an activity to work on that concept.
  • Week 5: This week we had a presentation and some examples of fractions (part 1), then the rest of the week we used our time to catch up on various materials including negatives, order of operations and fractions (part 1).
  • Week 6: This week we worked all together “round table” on a few past activities like the order of operation activity. We also had a presentation and some examples of fractions (part 2) and then worked on a new activity to go with this.
  • Week 7: This week we started the week by having a presentation and discussion on fractions (part 3), then worked on a assignment and had another “round table” working together on some of the concepts.
  • Week 8: This week we looked at fractions (part 4) with a presentation and discussion. Then we also had a presentation and discussion on decimals and percentages
  • Spring Break!
  • Week 9: This week we spent some time completing worksheets, did the unit diagnostic a second time, and a diagnostic for the next unit (abstract math). As well, we did a poster activity on factoring.
  • Week 10: This week we started our next unit: Abstract Math with a presentation and discussion. This included and introduction to algebra and the concept of a variable
  • Week 11: This week we continued our look at Abstract Math with a presentation and discussion on formulas in algebra and a worksheet reinforcing this.
  • Week 12: This week we continued our look at Abstract Math with a presentation and discussion on solving equations in algebra (part 1), a worksheet reinforcing this, and a fun diorama activity on balancing equations.
  • Week 13: This week we continued our look at Abstract Math with a presentation and discussion on more techniques in solving equations in algebra (part 2), a worksheet reinforcing this, and a fun poster activity on opposite operations.
  • Week 14: This week we continued our look at Abstract Math with a presentation and discussion on more techniques in solving equations in algebra (part 3), a worksheet reinforcing this, and a fun poster activity on isolating variables.
  • Week 15: This week students completed any work in the Abstract math unit and did a geometry diagnostic.
  • Week 16: This week we started our final unit Geometry with the first presentation on points, lines, and angles. We also did our algebra play, and a geometry drawing activity. Students also worked on the first geometry worksheet.
  • Week 17: In our final full week of classes, we looked at Geometry part 2 (Area and Volume) with a presentation and a worksheet
  • Week 18: In our last few days together we looked at Geometry part 3 (Triangles) with a presentation and then discussed how to look forward to math new semester
